IMF: SEQUESTRATION HURTING U.S. RECOVERY - The organization that spends half its time telling countries to cut spending is telling the U.S. to... uncut spending. Shahien Nasiripour: "As much as half of U.S. economic growth this year has been slashed due to tax increases and indiscriminate federal spending cuts known as sequestration, according to a sobering new forecast by the International Monetary Fund, which urged lawmakers to repeal the cuts. Risks to U.S. growth are 'modestly tilted to the downside,' the IMF said in its annual report on the nation's economy, as a reduction of $85 billion in government expenditures this year due to sequestration has dampened demand and investment, just as tax hikes have taken a big bite out of U.S. paychecks and reduced household spending. The IMF estimates growth of just 1.9 percent this year, as Managing Director Christine Lagarde said 'very significant' decreases in federal spending and higher taxes may have reduced growth by up to 1.75 percentage points." 'Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population. Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity.' A Navy aircraft carrier or amphibious ship, with a fully staffed medical trauma center, will be stationed offshore in case of an emergency. Military cargo planes will airlift in 56 support vehicles, including 14 limousines and three trucks loaded with sheets of bulletproof glass to cover the windows of the hotels where the first family will stay. Fighter jets will fly in shifts, giving 24-hour coverage over the president's airspace, so they can intervene quickly if an errant plane gets too close. According to the new HuffPost/YouGov poll, 60 percent of Americans say they favor allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana for their patients, while only 26 percent are opposed. Democrats and independents in the survey were most likely to support legalizing medical marijuana, by a 69 percent to 21 percent margin for Democrats and a 61 percent to 24 percent margin for independents.
