TORONTO -- Liberal prime minister Jean Chrétien's decision to break with U.S. President George W. Bush on the 2003 invasion of Iraq was a very public and rare expression of Canadian sovereignty that many critics here feared would jeopardize U.S.-Canada relations for years.

Border Security: Exploiting Immigrants for Canadian Reality TV
Questions were raised in the 1990s when home videos of homeless Americans baited to fight one another for a mere $50 were put on the market. I took solace in trusting Canada was so much better than that. We would never stoop that low. I was wrong. Our own federal government (approved by the Prime Minister's Office) put their stamp of approval on a "misery for reality TV" show. Lowly undocumented workers, desperate to leave their horrible homelands to start a new life in the 11th best country in the world, are now fodder for the cable television subscribers' amusement. Even by Canadian standards, Tom's an oddly forgettable figure. The whole thing evokes memories of Harry Plinkett's famous YouTube review of Star Wars: Episode I. Don't buy it? Try playing Plinkett game with Canadian politicians. Stephen Harper? Cold, stubborn, bossy, practical. Justin Trudeau? Naive, charming, upbeat, eloquent. Tom Mulcair? Um...Does "bearded" count? Continue reading...

You Wouldn't Work Extra Hours for No Pay, Why Should Teachers?
Many of us feel that the only way we have left to show our displeasure is to withhold the work that we normally do for free. Are you willing to do the same amount of work for 10 per cent less pay? How about 20 per cent less, 25 per cent less, 35, 50? When would your dignity and self-respect kick in and make you say "just hang on a minute. I'm a trained professional, and I don't work for free." Continue reading...
