Finance Minister Jim Flaherty stood up in the House of Commons Thursday afternoon after markets closed to deliver the budget speech. Flaherty had telegraphed for several days that he would not stray from an agressive 2015 deadline to balance the budget despite falling revenues and a lower-than-expected GDP forecast for the rest of 2013.  Continue reading... Since its introduction over a year ago, critics have reduced it to the "Bathroom Bill", a distorted characterization of what is truly important domestic human rights legislation. This legislation not only carries great symbolic value, but would also produce three substantive and practical effects to help reduce the frequency of discrimination and violence against transgendered Canadians. Stephen Harper won his majority in 2011 -- on his fourth attempt -- because of certain promises he made. He promised to control spending. He promised to balance the federal budget in 2014-15. And he promised to deliver tax relief once the budget was balanced, by extending income splitting to working families and by doubling the amount we can all put in our Tax-Free Savings Accounts each year.This year's federal budget will show us if he's serious about keeping the promises that got him his majority. Continue reading... KENNETH P. GREEN Do Not Believe Mulcair's Environmental Apocalypse We would never suggest that Canada is free of environmental challenges -- it certainly isn't. But an objective view of Canada's environmental trends hardly justify the kind of catastrophic environmental destruction that Thomas Mulcair would have the world believe Canada is enduring. And to so badly distort Canada's record, particularly while traveling abroad, is unseemly in the Leader of the Opposition, who, in theory at least, serves as the "government in waiting." There is still progress to be made in protecting Canada's environment, but hysterical pronouncements of imminent environmental Armageddon do not contribute much to the process. Continue reading...
