Nikki Thomas: The Ass-Backwards Response to Ass-Gate
Every time it feels like things can't possibly get any worse, Toronto politics finds a way to stoop to a new low. Rob Ford is engaged in yet another race to the bottom. Nonetheless, it's interesting to examine the attacks on Sarah Thomson, and the painfully-flawed logic behind them. But it's really worth examining the true meaning of the statements, and what it says about how sexual assault claims are treated. Exactly what burden of proof do we require before we believe a woman who claims assault? It seems that the court of public opinion requires a higher burden of proof than any other court in the land.
Jordan Cieciwa: The Three Things You're Doing Wrong at the Gym
I love my career, somewhere in the last decade people started calling me an expert. I stopped doing one-on-one training, and started creating programming for local gyms under my One Fit City banner. I noticed over the years three things people do that severely hinder their results.
Maude Barlow: We Don't Need "Co-Operation" -- We Need Water Justice
The United Nations has just named 2013 the year of water co-operation. Those of us who have been fighting privatization packaged as "partnerships" and deregulation promoted as "corporate sustainability" are naturally skeptical. The UN should instead launch a year of water justice.
Susan Inman: For Psychotic People, Medication Means Survival
When people suffering from mental illness receive intensive treatment in programs specifically designed for them, most of them do much better. Anti-psychotic medications are understood to provide the foundation upon which any other treatments can be added. These messages are in direct conflict with the message from journalist Robert Whitaker. Robert Whitaker does excellent work describing the egregious practices of the pharmaceutical industries. However, his extreme stance against the value of psychotropic medications is scary. Any parents of a psychotic son or daughter who heard his recent presentation in Vancouver would want to keep their child far away from the early psychosis intervention programs that offer the best hope for recovery.
Marci Warhaft-Nadler: Does Mayor Bloomberg Want Us to Be Healthy or Skinny?
The judge has spoken, the ruling has been been made and our right to drink super sized, sugar loaded beverages remains intact. "The rule prohibits selling non-diet soda and some other sugary beverages in containers bigger than 16 ounces." I have no problem with the government wanting to help us get healthier, but I do have an issue with it just wanting to make us skinnier.
